About Mary Lou
I am currently preoccupied with issues concerning education, specifically how knowledge is acquired, and the relationship between theory and practice. I am most interested in educational approaches that value whole people, and I place great emphasis on the dynamic triad of teacher, subject, student, without privileging either of the three. I am fortunate to work in the Textile Art Department at Capilano University, where I teach surface design in a two year diploma program. My artistic practice is based within the material practices associated with the textile arts, with an emphasis on installation or environments. My creative process evolves from text resources into material interpretations, manifesting usually in a purely visual format, although I place great importance on my ability to articulate my ideas through language.
